Jackson Hole Law Firm Seeks Family Law Attorney
You’re viewing this unlisted job ad because I’ve identified you as someone who may be a fit for a great opportunity.
I believe there is a chance for the right lawyer to unlock a ton of value for themselves, for the firm, and for the community.
About the market:
There is a tremendous need in Jackson Hole for family law attorneys–particularly attorneys skilled in high net worth divorce issues. There is a need for lawyers with a solid understanding of tax and trust and estate issues.
However, the insane cost of housing makes it difficult for attorneys to move here.
Freeburg Law is an established Jackson Hole law firm. We are looking for a leader to build out a robust family law practice.
About you:
Family law isn’t for everyone, but you have to know it’s for you. You take pride in helping families navigate a hard time in their lives. You enjoy the puzzle of business valuation and tax issues. You have client communication and client management skills. Maybe you wish that your current job emphasized client communication even more.
You are excited about the opportunity to take over a practice area within a small law firm. We can provide clients, money, support staff, marketing, camaraderie, coverage for your vacations, and backup on cases. But you need to be excited about being a leader and eventually owning the business unit.
About the opportunity:
We’re a general litigation shop, specializing in personal injury, business disputes and criminal defense.
As the owner of the firm, I get a thrill in the courtroom. I’m proud to have built a small but mighty team doing great work around the State of Wyoming. In 2022, I obtained an acquittal in a five day federal court jury trial. In 2024, we settled $3 million dollars in trucking cases.
But I’ve neglected my hometown family law market.
The reason goes back to when I started the law firm at age 29. I took a few family law cases. But lacked the client management skills and life experience to handle the practice area. So as the criminal defense practice grew, I dialed back family law. And when the PI practice took off, I stopped altogether.
Over the past few years, I’ve referred way too many great family cases to my friends in town. I’m ready to wade back into the practice area. But as a firm owner, I’ve got a lot on my plate and need help working the cases and delivering great results.
The offer:
- Billable hour expectation of 1500 hours/year (125 hours/month)
- Base salary of $8,3333 to $10,000/month ($100,000 to $120,000/year)
- Bonus expectation of $6,667/month ($80,000/year)
- The bonus expectation is based on meeting 125 hours/month in collected revenue. If you bill and collect more than 125 hours/month, then your bonus will be proportionally higher.
- Total comp should equal $200K, assuming you meet billable
- 401 with match up to 4%
- Health insurance stipend
- CLE and conferences reimbursement
- 3 weeks PTO
Everything is negotiable. For this position, I’ve set the base salary at the high end of the budget.
If partnership in the law firm is important to you, we can discuss a 30 month roadmap to partnership, so long as we agree on mutual benchmarks.
Questions you may have:
Are you expecting me to move to Jackson Hole?
No, you can work from anywhere. You should expect to travel to Jackson regularly. The firm will cover travel costs. You will also be expected to attend the annual state bar conference as well as one family law conference each year. We will will pay those costs, as well as any professional dues.
Lawyers at the law firm have worked remotely from Mexico, Portugal and Italy for months at a time. You do you.
What if I want to move to Jackson Hole?
That would be fantastic. We have a great office space. I would work hard to help you find housing and anything else you and your family need to make a smooth transition to the community.
On the Internet this looks like a personal injury firm. How are you confident that you can get good family law cases?
Yes, the firm does position itself as a personal injury firm online. When you join the team, we will update the homepage to reflect the emphasis on family law. However, most of the family law cases are coming through referrals, so we are less concerned about the online marketing presence.
What will the boots on the ground presence be?
Currently, Alex Freeburg and Ethan Morris are in the Jackson office, along with Erik Dahl our operations director. We’re happy to meet people in person. I expect that I will be involved in any in-person intakes.
Will I have a paralegal?
Yes, we are committed to providing you with a dedicated paralegal, once we have 15 active matters. To start, you will use shared administrative resources.
Are you technology dinosaurs?
No.
Will I have to track my hours?
Yes.
Do you think the clients will be fine with me being remote?
Yes. I’ve spoken to a number of other attorneys. We don’t anticipate this being an issue at all.
What’s the practice of law in Wyoming like?
We are the smallest state by population. As a result, we have less case law than many other states. Sometimes, this allows for more creativity. You should also expect a collegial and small bar, where you will quickly be known.
Next steps:
Please send me an email at [email protected], or call me at 307-203-6979 (personal cell) to let me know you’re interested.
Once we connect, we will set up a call. The first call is a quick get to know you call with either myself or Erik Dahl.
If the get to know you call goes well, we will have a second longer structured interview. Before that interview, you will need to provide a writing sample.
If that goes well, we will ask you for 3 references. We will call the references.
Once we do a reference check, we will make a written offer.
In our ideal world, we would have someone onboarding in the first quarter of 2025.
